Christmas season is approaching, which means family gatherings, copious amounts of food and decorating the house. However, what should we do to prepare our home's plumbing?
The major culprits involved in plumbing emergencies are the kitchen and bathroom. So, what can you do to minimise an after hours plumbing emergency (and call out fee!) this Christmas break?
1. Come shower time, you may feel pressured to get your family and guests through the bathroom as quickly as possible. Wait 15 minutes between showers to give the drains time to do their thing! Also check to make sure kids aren't clogging the shower drain with toys or wash towels.
2. During the festive season, we’re cooking (and eating) more. Resist the temptation to quickly put food scraps down the sink (unless you have an InSinkErator). Whatever you do, do not pour cooking fats down the sink. These liquids quickly solidify and can cause tricky drain blockages. Wipe grease from pots with paper towels and discard them in the bin or dedicate an old ice cream container to dispose of the grease after it solidifies.
3. Has it been more than 2 years since your last septic pump out? Avoid sewerage flowing onto your backyard cricket game and organise one before the relatives arrive.
4. Gutters filled with debris pose a high risk of clogging drains and are the perfect kindling for a house fire! Get your gutters cleaned by our team of professional plumbers before Christmas.
5. Provide bins in the bathroom and toilet so guests can comfortably dispose of any items that don’t belong down the toilet. Eg. sanitary items, nappies, wipes etc.
6. Get in early for your plumbing maintenance! Have you noticed a tap dripping or found the toilet is slow to fill? Get these jobs done before the Christmas shut down period to avoid an after hours call out fee.
Newk's Plumbing wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
